Vikings fend off WiHi Warriors 73-50 on Senior Night in cross-state battle

Cape girls turn around and even Polytech series with 83-67 victory
February 20, 2025

Timing is everything, and the seniors on the Cape girls’ basketball team could not have timed their regular-season peak performance any better.

On Senior Night, Feb. 18, the Vikings took down a talented, three-loss Wicomico High School team in cross-state basketball action 73-50 before turning around the next night and dismantling a two-loss Polytech team 83-67.

“You hope for that, but it doesn't always go that way for seniors; sometimes they have a bad Senior Night, and it's a big moment they'll remember,” said Cape coach Pat Woods. “I remember my Senior Night, so they'll remember their Senior Night - and they all killed it.”

Best to begin alphabetically here.

Faith Re knocked down six three-pointers in the contest as part of her game-high 21 points Feb. 18. She copied and pasted that performance from beyond the arc against Polytech Feb. 19, and scored 19 to giver her 40 in the final two games.

“I respect every single girl that I'm out there with and that's on the bench, and that I've played with in years past,” Re said. “I think that this program has given a lot to me, and I’ve really enjoyed it a lot these last four years.”

Havyn Greene grabbed 17 boards against WiHi, and on her signing day the following day – she will attend Webster University – she notched a career-high 26 points to lead the Vikings in scoring and finished second on the team with 15 boards.

“It's just amazing having a support system, and coming out on Senior Night and producing or helping other people by getting people open,” Greene said “It's just great vibes all around; I love this team.”

Hayden Hudson also set a career-high mark with 20 points to go along with 12 boards Feb. 18 before leading the Vikings in rebounds against Polytech with 18, a season high. She also set the program record for rebounds in a single season (217) and now has 652 in her career.

“It was a great game,” Hudson said on Senior Night. “We played very well, and it's always one you'll remember.”

In the Feb. 18 game, Cape trailed WiHi 14-13 at the end of the first quarter, but an explosion of offense in the second and third quarters swelled the Vikings’ lead to 60-37. Despite an even fourth, the home team came away victorious 73-50.

Hudson was joined by junior Amalia Fruchtman in the double-double club as the latter finished with 17 points and 11 rebounds against the Warriors.

Facing a quick turnaround, the Vikings carried the Feb. 18 momentum into their Feb. 19 tilt to deliver a 17-win Polytech team its third loss of the season. The Vikings jumped out to a 22-12 lead to start the second quarter, enough to absorb the Panthers’ comeback, putting the halftime score at 38-35.

Cape opened the second half scorching hot to take a commanding 67-45 lead and cruised to an 83-67 victory to wrap up the season 13-7. In addition to her 19 points, Re tallied eight assists. Greene’s double-double was joined by two helpers, three steals and two blocked shots. Fruchtman nearly had a triple-double but finished with 20 points, eight boards and nine assists. Junior Maya Yngve hit three from downtown as part of her 11 points.
