Volunteers should step up to clean up trash

January 17, 2025

Shaking my head in dismay is constant when I see folks needing government to fix problems.

Sure, litter in Sussex is problematic. Does that mean we need more government spending to fix it? Really?

Certainly the litter at homeless encampments is a separate and larger matter, a different subject for discussion.

I just returned from a beach city in Florida. It was a pleasure to see a brigade of volunteers out with loud T-shirts, grab tools and five-gallon buckets doing the good deed. Very visible. Community friendly and action, action, action. I see this in New England on a regular basis also.

There are multiple environmental groups in the county and beach areas. I have yet to see them work this issue on a regular basis. Let's challenge those groups and others to take the initiative to keep Sussex beautiful and welcoming. Relying on more government involvement and spending should not be the first solution and reaction.

A local call to action is needed. Who will step forward and lead the charge? Ah, but maybe there is no glory in trash ...
