“Is he anything to Buddy Lloyd, former wrestling coach?” I asked. “I’m Buddy Lloyd,” he said. “I’m also the assistant superintendent.” Smyrna with all its new construction and growing population still rocks it old school.
PUSH AND PULL - In football, it’s known as the “Bush Push.” It was 2005 as Southern California’s Reggie Bush pushed Matt Leinart into the end zone for the winning touchdown at Notre Dame. The replay was shown hundreds of times over the next week.
The winning touchdown was a penalty but not called. Now everyone knows the “Bush Push,” but it’s not that simple. Rules are written differently for professional, college and high school. In professional football, you can push a runner but not pull him.
In college you can push your own lineman but you can lift up and push a running back forward. Last Saturday at Smyrna, Cape’s Jerome Johnson gave quarterback Jack McPike a push Jack didn’t need on a 1-yard quarterback sneak. No one told Jerome to do this, but then again no one told him not to. One official called it a penalty, which negated the opening-drive score. Cape would not score again the rest of the season.
HORNETS STUNG IN OWN NEST - Delaware State was leading Norfolk State 16-0 at Alumni Stadium with 12 minutes remaining, and then it all just came apart as the Spartans scored 21 unanswered points including a game-winning touchdown pass from Dennis Brown to Chris Bell with 49 seconds left to play as the Spartans won 21 to 16. Delaware State fell to 3-7 on the season. Delaware State head coach Al Lavan, who fell to 37-28 at DSU (31-15 MEAC) and 5-1 vs. Norfolk State said, “The Spartans are a very dangerous team, and they took advantage of their opportunities late in the game. Norfolk State made the plays when it counted most. The bottom line is, we just weren’t good enough today.”
