‘The Little Mermaid’ musical to open at Milford High School Feb. 27
Milford High School’s Drama Club students will present their spring musical, “Disney's The Little Mermaid,” at 6 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 27; 7 p.m., Friday, Feb. 28; and 1 and 7 p.m., Saturday, March 1, in the auditorium at 1019 N. Walnut St., Milford.
Based on the classic Disney animated film, the show features iconic songs like "Part of Your World," "Under the Sea," and "Poor Unfortunate Souls," as well as a few new musical numbers that bring the vibrant world of Ariel, King Triton and the unforgettable Ursula to life. Sophomore Juliene Combs, who portrays Ursula’s slippery sidekick Jetsam, said, “My favorite song to perform is ‘Sweet Child’ because of the harmonies, and it shows Jetsam’s personality.” The fun-filled, family-friendly adaptation allows the audience to get to know the characters and story line on a deeper level.
The talented cast includes a mix of students from all grade levels. Junior Merary Haro-Purata takes on the role of Ursula, and she shared her excitement about playing the villainous sea witch, saying, “The role may be one of my most fun yet! Ursula has always been this big character, and I’m so honored to fill her big personality and bring her to life.”
After dipping her toe in this fall with a student showcase, new MHS drama director Elli Swain said, “I am ecstatic to dive under the sea with such an astounding group of students in their spring musical, ‘Disney's The Little Mermaid!’ I have loved watching the kids bring their own unique spin to these beloved characters. They have really brought the story to life with a fresh take.”
Taking the lead for set design and construction this year is Carissa Meiklejohn, former MHS drama director. “After 20 years, it was time to bring in a fresh perspective. I am thrilled to learn a different creative side and mentor Mrs. Swain. I couldn't be more delighted to have her with us to share her knowledge and experience with our students."
