CAMP Rehoboth will present “Voices from Stonewall” on the Elkins-Archibald Atrium stage for performances at 7 p.m., Friday, Nov. 15, and 4 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 16, at 37 Baltimore Ave., Rehoboth Beach.
“I’m thrilled to know this show will be on stage at CAMP Rehoboth again,” said Fay Jacobs, who wrote and directed the piece. “It was a pleasure to work with these actors on such a key part of our LGBTQ history. And to bring it to life for those who remember the time and those who only know about Stonewall as history seems important in today’s world.”
The 1969 uprising and riot at the Stonewall Inn in New York’s Greenwich Village has been officially recognized as the launch of the modern gay rights movement in the United States. The site on Christopher Street is now a National Monument, and the story of Stonewall is a touchstone of LGBTQ+ history.
Audiences will hear the story through the actual words of the people – the rioters, the police, the journalists who were there 55 years ago on June 28, 1969 – voiced by four dynamic actors re-creating the event. Attendees will hear the words from inside and outside the Stonewall when bottles flew, paddy wagons arrived, and young drag queens, homeless kids, transgender youth, some butch lesbians, and a collection of gay people surprised the police and finally fought back.
