Masser 5-Miler to kick off 21st summer series
The 18th Annual Masser 5-Miler will kick off this year’s Seashore Striders Summer Racing Series with the event taking to the streets at 7:30 a.m., Sunday, May 29, from Cape Henlopen High School in Lewes. The 5-mile event will be one of two 5-milers held this summer in the Seashore Striders Championship Series.
The course will start and finish at the track stadium, where runners will use Gills Neck Road and dip one mile into the Wolfe Pointe development before heading back to the high school by way of Rodaline Avenue, Third Street and Kings Highway. Runners traveling to the event can use Kings Highway or Savannah Road to enter the high school.
Registration will be held 6 -7:15 a.m. at the school for a race-day registration cost of $25, while preregistration is $20. Awards will be presented to the top three overall champions, master champions, and the top three in each age group from 9 & under to 75 & over.
The 2011 USA Clydesdale & Filly Racing Federation Delaware Clydesdale 5-Mile State Championship will also begin at 7:30 a.m. All participants must weigh in at the registration area before 7 a.m.
Kids' "I Did It" races
Following the finish of the 5-mile event, the annual Masser Kids’ “I Did It” races will be held near the finish area. Events include the 25-meter Diaper Dash for youth 1-2 years and the 50-m Toddler Trot for youth 3-4 years. A 100-m race will be held for the 5-6-year-olds, and the 7-8-year-olds will run 200 meters. The 9-10- and 11-12-year-olds will complete one lap.
Participants are encouraged to register from 8-8:20 a.m. The cost for the youth races is $6, which includes a T-shirt. All children will receive a custom Masser finishing medal.
Championship Series
To become a qualifier of the Seashore Striders Championship Series, one must complete any five of the 11 series 5K events as well as one of the two series 5-mile events. If a runner completes more than these six events, his or her best five 5Ks and best 5-miler will be used for final place within the age group, with computations courtesy of Masser Systems Inc.
Awards will be presented to the overall champions, the top five finishers in the following age categories: 9 & under, 10-13, 14-19, 20-24, then five-year age groups through 100+ and to all series qualifiers. Special awards also will be presented to those who complete all 13 of the Championship Series races. Championship Series awards will be provided by Masser Systems Inc.
All finishers are automatically entered into the Championship Series. There is not an entry fee for the Championship Series. The Championship Series award ceremony will follow the Last Blast Prediction 5K Sept. 3.
