Everywhere I go to play or work, things are being torn down
The Owls play at 6-2 Navy on Saturday, Oct. 31. The Midshipmen, who have lost games to Ohio State (31-27) and Pitt (27-14), will travel to Notre Dame after the Temple game before returning home to host Delaware.
THE LAW WON - Here’s a bit of an oddity: Gordy Law is a freshman on the Navy football roster and is listed as home schooled from Berwick, Pa. You guessed it, he was the starting quarterback and team captain at Berwick High School He was a member of the Christian band at home called “Vertical Movement” where he played the piano, and guitar and sings.
“No sir, we don’t play Horizontal Bop, Triangle Man, The Circle Game, Hip To Be Square or Help Me Rhombus! Help Me Rhombus?”
TEARING DOWN THE HOUSE - I played football for Temple with home games at Temple Stadium, which has been torn down. I went to high school at Bishop Egan, which has been torn down. I taught at a Cape building which has been torn down, and my older colleagues and I concur with consensus that the time capsule from 1976 should have been recycled with the rest of the bricks.
“Why didn’t they put a hockey ball or something tangible in there,” joked former coach Carolyn Ivins.
SEASON OF THE WITCH - Rosey Castillo goes full boat “Werewuff” ready to pinch the damsel in the red dress, Joey Kwit inside the ice tongs death grip before shredding him like shaved Italian water ice. The downside of road racers in costume is that they beat some serious runners who find it depressing - I would - to lose to a kibitzer wearing a five-pound wolf’s head or a native prancer, a retro hippy Chong looking dude or Superwoman.
I was once outkicked to the finish line at the Buffalo Stampede 10K - I played the part of the Buffalo - by an old guy in a tuxedo screaming “kick his butt.” I was scarred for seconds.
BEACON BEATS DELMAR - BlackBerrys are like digital tom-toms or upgraded coconut communication systems. Here is a report from Harry Hudson on the latest win by the undefeated Beacon football team:
“Beacon rolls over Delmar 38-0 with Tyreik Burton taking the opening kickoff to the house. He also had over 175 yards with two TDs and several tackles. Beacon’s ends this game with a defensive shutout with Tommy Ott and Luke Benson with 15-plus tackles. Aaron Dennis had 10 tackles and a TD, Elias Harmon at safety with one interception, Luke Benson had one TD, John Stevenson scored all our extra points and Todd Keen threw for over 150 yards. Also, Matt Kane scored an extra point.”
Thanks, Harry Hudson. Sent from my Verizon Wireless BlackBerry.
HOP ON THE BUS GUS - Undefeated Millsboro Middle School’s football team, coached by the classy Lance Keeler, was scheduled to play at Mariner Middle last Thursday but illness had evidently not only decreased students in attendance but felled a few bus drivers as well. Lance called coach Juan Saez late in the day, apologized and offered to forfeit the game because of a transportation snafu.
Making a long story longer, 45 minutes later Juan and Mikey Saez showed up in a school bus, loaded up a 50-person Millsboro squad and took them over toMariner for the game. Millsboro won 14-0, but coach Mikey was pleased, saying, “They’ve been killing everybody. It was a hard-hitting game well played by both teams.”
Millsboro did find its own bus to take the team back home.
SNIPPETS - The Cape volleyball team finished the regular season at Sussex Tech last Thursday with a 3-0 straight set win over the Ravens to finish the season 10-5. The Vikings are on the bubble for a berth in the 16-team state tournament.
Bleachers in the new “Not So Little Big House” at Cape 3 are being snapped together, but there is still work to be done finishing the main floor. I was told that 700 kids were at Cape’s homecoming dance Saturday night and they all looked great and behaved wonderfully. So why doesn’t someone put that in the newspaper? Don’t know?
