Memorial Day takes on a special meaning this year as a new veterans memorial will be blessed during the outdoor service at 10 a.m., Monday, May 31, in the labyrinth at St. George's Chapel, 20271 Beaver Dam Road, Harbeson.
Colby Fox from Boy Scout Troop 89 in Millsboro completed the memorial as his Eagle Scout project.
As part of the service, retired Col. “Buzz” Buse, USMC, will deliver remarks titled A Tribute to the Fallen.
Sixteen-year-old Colby, who currently holds the rank of Life Scout, raised funds and created this unique veterans memorial honoring those who lost their lives or are missing in action. Colby's father Christopher and paternal grandfather Chandler were in the Marines. His paternal grandmother Joan served in the Navy as a nurse. Colby hopes to attend the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md.
St. George’s extends a special thank you to Colby and all Troop 89 members for their help in the 168 work hours it took to create the memorial.
Eagle Scout is the highest rank attainable in the Scouts BSA division. Since its introduction in 1911, the Eagle Scout rank has been earned by more than 2 million young men. Nearly 1,000 girls earned the elite rank in 2020, the first year they were eligible. Requirements include earning a minimum total of 21 merit badges and demonstration of Scout spirit, service and leadership. This includes an extensive service project that the Scout plans, organizes, leads and manages.
