This past weekend, at the much anticipated Ryder Cup golf event at Whistling Straits golf course in Wisconsin, the United States team was able to crush the European team by a record score of 19 to 9. They were able to use their driving distance advantage to win most of the par five holes, which has become very important in high skill level golf events these days. It also helped that on this course there is very little rough close to the fairways and this allowed them to freely use their driving distance strength advantage even if they missed the fairway. The European team also needed more help from Rory McIlroy, who disappointingly did not play well. For the US team, all of the players contributed to the victory. The best example was Dustin Johnson who went 5 and 0 on the weekend. The team captains for the US team did a very good job in their pairings for the US team. You could really tell that the players enjoyed the camaraderie, which has been lacking in previous years.
The next Ryder Cup is in Italy in two years. I can guarantee that the competition will be closer because the European team, will want to avenge their poor performance from this years event. Losing so badly this year will be a great motivation to come back ready to win.
Speaking of losing badly, the Philadelphia Eagles got crushed by the Dallas Cowboys on Monday night by the score of 41 to 21. It was a difficult game to watch. The Eagles offensive line was hobbled by injuries to two starters and was terrible for most of the game. They gave QB Jalen Hurts no time in the pocket to do his job correctly and he failed miserably as a result. The offensive game plan didn't make much sense either. For some incredibly strange reason, they only ran the ball three times in the entire game.
Except for the first quarter, the defense wasn't much better. They looked old and slow.
Unfortunately, I don’t think it’s going to get much better this week because they have to play the AFC champion, the Kansas City Chiefs. The Chiefs will be very motivated to beat the Eagles this week since they just lost their second game of the of the year to the Los Angeles Chargers. I sure hope the Eagles get their act together in practice this week and bring it to the field on Sunday.
Amazingly, the NBA season isn’t too far away. Seems like they just finished playing. The 76ers training camp has started without one of their best players, Ben Simmons. He’s holding out. I actually don’t expect him to play for the team this year. I didn’t want to have to say this, but I hope they find somebody who is willing to trade for him. I don’t want Joel Embiid to have to carry the team because he usually gets hurt during the season.
Also, the 76ers are making some history right at the start of the season because the new play by play announcer is a women named Kate Scott. She has worked mostly on the west coast so I haven't heard her call a game yet, so I am looking forward to this development. She is replacing Mark Zomoff, who was the announcer for the last 25 years before he retired. She has to be very good at her job to step into his shoes.
