It's about time

I was not able to watch the Philadelphia Eagles game against the Denver Broncos on Sunday, but the Eagles soundly defeated them by the score 30-13. For most of the game, the Eagles offense was able to go up and down the field against the Denver defense who are supposed to be one of the best in the NFL. The Broncos’ offense was not able to do much against the Eagles’ inconsistent defense, and even the special teams contributed in the first half by blocking a field goal attempt. I hope the team can continue to play this well this week against the New Orleans Saints who have also been inconsistent. Maybe the Eagles can start a home winning streak of one game since they haven't won at home for 11 months. They need to win to have any hope of catching the Dallas Cowboys who are playing the Kansas City Chiefs this week.

The 76ers are really struggling. They have lost the last five games while without Joel Embiid. This is telling of just how important he is to the team and that he is clearly one of the best basketball players in the world. The Sixers were in first place at 8-2 in the Eastern Conference when Joel was forced to stay out after being diagnosed with COVID and now they are all the way down to eighth place. I think Joel will be out for at least another week as he gets back in playing shape from the illness. Hopefully he didn't get too sick and can bring the team back up to speed quickly.

All the World Cup qualifying games for the 2022 competition in Qatar are going on now. The U.S. is in a surprisingly difficult fight for one of the three qualification spots in our region of the world which includes Canada, Mexico, Costa Rica, Panama and others. I think the U.S. is going to ultimately qualify, but is it going to be too close for comfort. This past week they played a home game against Mexico, winning 2-0 and played very well. Then they went to Jamaica and tied 1-1, playing a lackluster game in which they were very lucky to come out with the tie.

So far in this qualification cycle, the surprising team has been Canada. Their men's team has historically not been very good. So if they make it to the World Cup along with the U.S., I will be rooting for them as well.

In high school sports, I want to wish good luck to the Cape Henlopen field hockey team. I hope they continue scoring a bunch of goals in the finals this weekend. And it's hard to believe, but it's time for the winter sports teams as they get going with boys’, girls’ and unified basketball, cheerleading, indoor track and swimming and wrestling.
