During the annual St. George’s Parish Memorial Day service, featured speaker Henry “Buzz” Buse, a retired U.S. Marine Corps colonel, said Memorial Day is a day of remembrance and also a day of love and hope.
Buse, who has been a member of the church for the past 12 years and is on the church vestry, said families and fellow combatants have a bond and share emotions like no others. “Our hope is that someday the world can find peace. It seems highly unlikely, but we can pray for it,” he said.
He talked about immigrants who joined the military who laid down their lives for our freedom. “They knew the dangers that lay ahead and they did not falter, and they served wherever their government sent them if they had support or not,” he said. Buse said they also knew they would be get the most dangerous assignments in their efforts to serve and become American citizens.
Buse said our fallen heroes have given us the gift of freedom. “They traded their lives so we could and can live our’s freely,” he said.
The Rev. Shelly McDade offered the homily during the service, The Rev. Deacon Chris Miller-Marcin said prayers for the military, Chris Morrow and Jon Rania provided music and Bill Schatzabel offered the scripture readings.
St. George’s Chapel, dating back to 1794, is part of the Episcopal Parish, which includes St. George’s between Lewes and Harbeson and All Saint’s Church in Rehoboth Beach.
