As usual, Father’s Day weekend is U.S. Open week in men’s golf. This year, it is being played at the Country Club in Brookline, Mass., for the first time since 1988. I think it will be interesting to see how low the scores are for the modern players on this course. I think American Colin Morikawa and Matthew Fitzpatrick from England can win this tournament along with Rory McElroy of Northern Ireland, who won last week at the Canadian Open.
On a cool side note, this is the site of one of the most famous U.S. Opens ever. In 1913, 20-year-old Francis Ouimet beat the best two players in the world. And it was won in a playoff against Harry Varden and Ted Ray, both from England. Francis actually grew up across the street from the course.
In baseball, the Phillies are continuing to play well, winning 11 of their last 13, but so are the Braves, who have won 14 straight games and are close to catching the Mets for first place. The Phillies can still make the playoffs because of the extra Wild Card position that was added this year to both leagues. Their offense has to continued to hit the ball well to support the starting pitching that has recently performed quite well. One exception is Ranger Suarez, who has struggled with his control. That has been a surprise to me since he pitched so well last year in his rookie season. I am hoping he can get this figured out and have better showings going forward.
