After 54 years at Five Points outside Lewes, Bests’ Ace Hardware has moved. A sign on the door says, “Closed as of 10/7/22!!”
The new store is now open around the corner on Route 9 at 32437 Lewes-Georgetown Highway.
The Best family has been operating a business in and around the Nassau and Five Points area for nearly 100 years. In 1932, Thomas Best Sr. built a grain milling operation alongside the railroad that went through Nassau. The family moved the business to its current location in 1968. It became hardware only in 1993.
The Delaware Department of Transportation purchased the property in the old location in September 2019 and is set to begin Five Point intersection improvements soon. C.R. McLeod, DelDOT spokesperson, said access to the parking lot will be blocked off in November to prevent any through traffic and the existing building will be demolished in the near future.
A portion of the property will be used as part of the upcoming Plantation Road improvements, said McLeod, in an email Oct. 12.
