U.S. men fall in World Cup

December 9, 2022

This week, the U.S. Men’s national soccer team lost 3-1 to the Netherlands. The Dutch were clearly the better team that day. The U.S. was trying to play perfect soccer to score until it was way too late. By my rough estimation, the U.S. only had two shots on goal in the first half. You’re almost never going to win a match like that. The Netherlands was very opportunistic on offense. They only had four good chances to score, and they scored on three.

The whole reason the U.S.  advanced to the knockout round was their defense. They did not play very well in this match. I think it is wishful thinking for people to expect the U.S. to have much of a chance to win the next World Cup in 2026. We would have to get a whole lot better fast.

The Phillies’ management had a very busy week at the Major League Baseball winter meetings. They signed free agent Trea Turner to play shortstop for the foreseeable future. He got a contract for 11 years and $300 million. He will obviously not play shortstop for the entire life of the contract, but I just hope he can continue to hit well for years seven through 11. They also signed pitcher Taiwan Walker to a four-year contract to be their fourth or a fifth starter. He played previously for the Mets. I hope he can live up to his potential.

The Eagles dominated the Tennessee Titans by the score of 38-10 in Sunday’s game. The Eagles’ offense seemed unstoppable especially in the passing game. AJ Brown had a fantastic game against his former team and  DeVonta Smith was not too bad either. Tennessee seems like they are a one-man team, and that person is running back Derrick Henry. He did not have a productive game at all, and might be aging like a typical running back.

The Eagles’ next game is against the New York Giants who actually tied the Washington Commanders last week. If the Eagles team takes this game seriously, they should win pretty easily.

The four teams in the College Football Playoff this year are defending champion Georgia, Ohio State, Michigan and TCU. Ohio State back in because USC lost its conference championship game to Utah by a big score. I think the champion will come out of the Ohio State-Georgia game. I think the selection committee’s goal was to hope that Ohio State will play Michigan for the national championship for the first time ever. The semifinal games will be on New Year’s Eve.
