Milton area students were recognized for their award-winning posters and essays in the Milton Fire Department’s fire prevention contest award ceremony Jan. 25.

Fire Chief Johnny Hopkins said the student educational program, which he said he learned was the oldest in the nation, is a very important tool to spread the message about fire safety and prevention.

“It might be responsible for saving their lives, or maybe your life, in the future,” Hopkins said.

Students from Delmarva Christian, H.O. Brittingham and Milton elementaries, and Mariner Middle School entered the poster and essay contest. All students who earned first, second and third prizes received a medal and $5 gift card to McDonald’s or Chik-Fil-A from the Milton Fire Department.
