City of champions?

February 3, 2023

Philadelphia might become this year’s city of champions. When the fall seasons started, the 76ers and Eagles had more of a chance, in my opinion, to win a championship than the Phillies did, and they made it to Game 6 of the World Series.

The Eagles will play in Super Bowl LVII against the Kansas City Chiefs. The Birds have a legitimate chance to win this game. This Eagles team is very well rounded, and then there's the fact that the Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes (who is currently the best quarterback in the NFL) has a significant ankle injury to deal with. I started to have very high hopes for the Eagles’ prospects this year when they traded for A.J. Brown from the Tennessee Titans on draft day to give quarterback Jalen Hurts a definite No. 1 receiver. Everyone was very surprised when the Titans gave up on A.J. so fast. One of the other advantages the Eagles have over the Chiefs is the offensive line. Center Jason Kelce and tackle Lane Johnson are going to be Hall of Famers when their careers are over. This is going to be a great matchup. Go Eagles!

I wasn’t surprised to hear that Tom Brady has decided to retire after his 23-year hall of fame career as a quarterback. He is certainly one of the best quarterbacks in the history of the NFL. I have heard that he is going to be a broadcaster for Fox starting next year. I also hope he’s been paying attention to how Troy Aikman and Tony Romo have made the transition from quarterback to broadcaster. They are both humble and good at their jobs. It will be interesting to see what comes of this.

It is almost all-star break time in the NBA and also the trade deadline. The 76ers are currently in third place in the Eastern Conference. There is significant chatter about trading Sixers forward Matisse Thybulle. If it happens, I will be disappointed because he is a young player who plays strong defense, which is needed in the playoffs. I actually wish they would trade P.J. Tucker because he plays the same role as Matisse does, but scores even fewer points. The Sixers will be very happy when the all-star break occurs in about 10 days, and the league gets five to seven days off. Joel Embiid desperately needs time off. He does not look healthy and I think he may be struggling with a foot injury. Let's hope it's no big deal and the rest does him a world of good. Go Sixers!
