Cape High sewing students donate skills to bag project

Cape High sewing students put their skills to good use by crafting bags for children in foster care and women in transitional homes.

Members of the Lower Delaware Duffel Bag Project held a week-long ‘sew-in’ at the school, where fashion and construction design students used scrap materials to create five duffel bags and 81 small zipper pouches. 

The Lower Delaware Duffel Bag Project provides the bags to Delaware Family Services, whose caseworkers give them to children entering foster care. 

Project members Hilda Adams and Constance Zakszeski said bags are also given to women residing in transitional homes after prison or rehabilitation, and to teenagers in the Group Home for Girls at People’s Place. Members also buy journals and pajamas to give to older children.

Adams and Zakszeski said it was great having the students involved. 

For many of them, Zakszeski said, it was a wake-up call. They felt good about doing something to help children who aren’t as fortunate.

It was generous of them to give their time and talent, Adams said, and she hopes to return to Cape to work with them again.
