Three races in three days in three towns

June 16, 2023

The Father’s Day 5K has been a family affair for the 33 years it has been in production in Rehoboth Beach. The race always brings out the regular runners and walkers, but adds in families, kids, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and siblings who love to complete the race with their loved ones. The race always attracts some first-time participants. This year is no exception, as more than 250 people are registered for the event, with 300 expected to toe the line on Wilmington Avenue Sunday, June 18. There will be a separate 5K walk division this year along with the 5K run. Registration is still open at seashorestriders.com with limited shirts still left. Zogg’s Raw Bar & Grill will host the event.

Triple Crown Series

The Father’s Day 5K is the third race in a three-race weekend presented by the Seashore Striders and called the Triple Crown Series. The series will begin Friday, June 16, with the 19th annual Georgetown Library 5K & 1-Mile Walk at 7 p.m. We will move to the inaugural 302 Uncorked 5K at Hudson Fields near Milton at 9 a.m., Saturday, June 17. The series ends with the Father’s Day 5K in Rehoboth. Anyone who completes the trio of races will be eligible for an award presented to participants at the Jungle Jim’s 5K the following week.

Dave Reynolds Biathlon

The 32nd annual Dave Reynolds Biathlon is barely two weeks away; the popular ocean swim and 5K run will take place at 8 a.m., Sunday, July 2, in Rehoboth Beach. The race is named after the late Dave Reynolds, a longtime Rehoboth Beach Patrol lifeguard. Participants can take part in the individual or team divisions. The race will feature a half-mile swim followed by a 3.1-mile run. Proceeds will go toward the annual Dave Reynolds Scholarship. There will be no race-day registration, with a mandatory packet pickup from noon to 2 p.m., Saturday, July 1, at Grove Park. Wetsuits are allowed, but they cannot be left in the transition area due to limited space. Registration is open through 2 p.m., Saturday, July 1. More race information can be found at seashorestriders.com.

The second annual Youth Biathlon for kids 12 and under will be held just before the main event. We will gather the kids on the beach at Baltimore Avenue at 7:15 a.m. for a 7:20 a.m. start. The kids will go about 100 yards in the water followed by a 400-yard beach run. There will be no entry fee for this event, but the athletes must still register online, seashorestriders.com. No T-shirts, but medals to all finishers. Deadline for registration is 2 p.m., Saturday, July 1.

High school nationals

Cape’s Bailey Fletcher jumped 14-feet-7-inches this season and will compete this weekend at the New Balance Outdoor Nationals at Franklin Field in Philadelphia. The meet will be held from Thursday through Sunday. Fletcher will compete at 3 p.m., Saturday, June 17, in the rising stars pole vault championship. The boys’ 400-meter relay team of Maurki James, Konner Knarr, Trey Johnson and L.T. Messick will also compete Saturday at 5 p.m. The top eight will qualify for Sunday’s final. The Cape sprinters have broken the school record twice this season and would like to lower it again. For those who would like to watch the meet, there will be a live webcast at NBNationals.com.

Note - Above Xpectations Track & Field Club, coached by Dontez Collins, will also be competing in the meet.
