Kathy McGuiness, surrounded by friends, family and local business owners, announced her run to be the Democratic nominee of the 14th District in the Delaware House of Representatives during a May 4 event on the Dewey Beach Baywalk.
The former state auditor was introduced by former Speaker of the House Pete Schwartzkopf, who presented her with a $600 check to help support her campaign.
“After hearing from, talking to and receiving encouragement from my neighbors, fellow Democrats and friends throughout the 14th Representative District, I’ve decided I want to continue to serve my community and to build on my accomplishments as a six-term Rehoboth Beach commissioner,” said McGuiness.
Among issues addressed, McGuiness said she will fight to protect women’s health and reproductive rights; work on solving the healthcare crisis by attracting doctors, nurses, specialists and pharmacists; ensure the 14th District’s teachers have the resources to provide the best education possible; protect the state’s natural resources; protect and promote local businesses; press Delaware Department of Transportation to improve traffic flow; and work with state and county officials to create safe and affordable workforce housing.
“I’m grateful to the many prominent Delawareans who have lined up to endorse my candidacy,” she said.
Those include Schwartzkopf, 20th District Representative Stell Parker Selby, Dewey Beach Mayor Bill Stevens, Dewey Beach Commissioner Paul Bauer, former Rehoboth Planning Commission Chair Richard Perry, former Ambassador Tom McDonald, former Rehoboth Beach Commissioner Steve Scheffer and former Dewey Mayor Pat Wright.
