Getting a cone in Lewes in the 1960s
There are few summer pastimes better than getting an ice cream cone on a hot and humid evening. The Lewes Dairy Queen has been a source of those tasty treats since 1954. DQ was one of the first franchises to enter Lewes, but locals embraced it immediately. Along with King’s Ice Cream on Second Street, the ice cream business continues to thrive today in a busier, more touristy version of Lewes. This photograph was made in the 1960s, showing the front of the building facing the intersection of Savannah Road and Cape Henlopen Drive. Jeremy and Ashley Diehl took over ownership of DQ in 2015. Prior to them, Ed and Shirley Mihm owned and operated the business since the 1980s.
