It appears President Joe Biden will be spending the weekend at his North Shores home beginning Friday, Sept. 27.
The White House’s Week Ahead Guidance issued for the week of Sept. 22 doesn’t include the schedule for this weekend. However, the Federal Aviation Administration issued a temporary flight restriction notice Sept. 25 for the area over his North Shores home that begins at 1:30 p.m., Friday, Sept. 27, and runs through 11 a.m., Monday, Sept. 30.
A media advisory, issued Sept. 26, said Biden will be traveling to Scranton, Pa., the morning of Sept. 27.
This is at least the third time in the past few months the president has decided to head to the Rehoboth Beach area after the Week Ahead Guidance didn’t include the president’s weekend plans.
In terms of presidential happenings, it’s been a historic few months for the area, because there have been a number of events that fall under the he-was-here-when-that-happened category. First, Biden was here in mid-July when the assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump took place in Pennsylvania. Then, a week later, Biden isolated himself here when he got COVID-19. Soon after that, while still in isolation, he announced he would not be seeking re-election.
This is what can typically be expected in terms of security measures for when the president is in town:
- Gordons Pond users could see restrictions. The park’s parking lot is just around the corner from Biden’s home and is used as a landing site for Marine One
- If Biden decides to drive, motorists on Route 1 should be prepared for delays. By road, there’s really only one way to his house – southbound on Route 1, then through Rehoboth Beach. As the presidential motorcade makes its way south, police and state personnel sit at all intersections blocking traffic
- The FAA’s temporary flight restrictions limit use of the airspace – including drones – from Dover south to Ocean City, Md., and west to the Maryland border
- The Coast Guard establishes security zones in the ocean area immediately in front of North Shores beach and in the Lewes-Rehoboth Canal.
Biden hasn’t been out in public as much this summer as he has in years past. However, if he does venture out, send photos to cflood@capegazette.com.
