Downed line causes fire, power outage along Route 24

October 14, 2024

A downed power line Oct. 13 cut off power for about 10 hours and caused a fire in a wooded area of Route 24.

Rehoboth Beach Volunteer Fire Co. was dispatched at 1:20 p.m. to 21171 John J. Williams Highway for a motor vehicle crash and learned that a tree fell across Route 24, taking out the power lines and hitting the car.

The downed lines caused a fire in an adjacent wooded area. Officials said fire crews dragged a hose line through the woods to extinguish the fire because of the live wires.

The road was closed for about 10 hours, officials said, and there were no injuries.
