Thank you, Sussex County voters, for putting your trust in me as the newly elected District 3 county council member. I am truly grateful for your support. Your message to me and the other council members is clear – it’s time for a change.
This District 3 contest was never about me. It was about our shared desire for change; a desire for relief from the relentless overbuilding that is affecting the quality of our lives; a desire for roads, schools and healthcare to catch up with the population; and a desire to conserve our environment and refocus our efforts on affordable homes.
We have a big job ahead of us; this no time to relax. The election may be over, but our work is just beginning. And I use the word “our” because you must stay active and involved if we are to successfully set a new direction.
Putting words into action will require changes to county ordinances and, ultimately, the county comprehensive plan. We need ordinances that set the boundaries for smart, balance, sustainable growth. We need to say no to developments unless and until infrastructure is in place to handle the growth. We must ensure that developers pay their fair share of their impact on our schools. We must prioritize protection of our forests, wetlands and marshes to ensure a more resilient community in the face of severe weather.
In the coming days, I will sit down with my fellow council members to discuss specific ordinances that can accomplish the goals of commonsense development. Our focus will be on smart growth options, support for schools and affordable housing, and protections for the environment.
For these changes to be adopted, I will need your support. Show up and make your voices heard.
If you are ready to join me, stay in touch so you can stay informed. For now, you can follow me at Facebook.com/janeforsussex. Soon, I will announce additional options that will help us stay connected and engaged.
Finally, I want to thank everyone who helped this campaign along the way. This includes the tireless campaign team, all the volunteers, the meet-and-greet hosts, the letter writers and, most of all, the voters.
And to my fellow members of county council, let’s achieve the desired commonsense growth we need to protect our quality of life, our environment and the character of our beloved coastal region. We know there's common ground: let’s find it together.
