Combining film, literature and gourmet cuisine to celebrate compassionate living, VegRehoboth will host Veg Fall Fest events Monday, Nov. 18 to Sunday, Nov. 24.
The VegRehoboth Book Club will meet from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., Monday, Nov. 18, at Cultured Pearl, 301 Rehoboth Ave., Rehoboth Beach. Attendees will discuss “For the Birds” by educator and animal-rights activist Karen Davis. Focusing on Davis’s work in animal advocacy, the book highlights the injustices suffered by intelligent and loving bird species. Through a blend of academic and personal insights, Davis shares her journey to becoming a devoted advocate and tells the stories of individual birds who have deepened her commitment to ending their suffering.
Veg Fall Fest invites the community to enjoy plant-based dinners at two top local spots. Registration is required at meetup.com/vegrehoboth. Mariachi restaurant will offer its Mexican, Spanish and Latin American specialties at 5 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 19, at 14 Wilmington, Ave., Rehoboth Beach. Bodhi Kitchen will serve an innovative Asian-inspired menu Wednesday, Nov 20, at 10 N. First St., Rehoboth Beach. The menu will feature bold, street-food-inspired flavors from Thailand, Korea, China, Vietnam and Japan.
The Rehoboth Beach Film Society will present the inaugural Veg Film Fest Thursday to Saturday, Nov. 21 to 23, at the Cinema Art Theater near Lewes.
Featured will be documentaries and short films focusing on three reasons to live plant-based diets.
”The Last Pig” is an intimate reflection on animal treatment, following ethical pig farmer, Bob Comis, as he contemplates his transition out of raising animals for slaughter.
“Humans and Other Animals” takes viewers on an epic journey, from witnessing firsthand how animals think, use language and feel love, to dangerous investigations of powerful industries, using custom-built equipment and never-before-attempted tactics.
“Love Over Money” tells the true story of John Robbins, heir apparent to the Baskin-Robbins ice cream empire, who turns down a billion-dollar inheritance from his father to follow his own truth. culminating in a best-selling book that becomes a lifeline for his father and a catalyst for their reconciliation.
“Eating for Tomorrow” takes audiences on a cinematic journey around the world, from the depths of the Amazon rainforests to the Taiwanese Mountains, the Mongolian desert, the US Dust Bowl, the Norwegian Fjords and the Scottish coastlines. The story of the Earth is told though shocking testimonials, poignant accounts from indigenous people most affected by our ever-changing planet, globally renowned figures and leading scientists.
Short films include “The Next Girl,” “Intervention,” “Coffee Creamer,” ”Breast Milk Taste Test” and Udder Singeing.”
Veg Fall Fest culminates with ThanksLiving dinner Sunday, Nov. 24, at Salero atop the Henlopen Hotel on the Rehoboth Beach Boardwalk. The gourmet plant-based feast includes a four-course meal by Chef David Horton.
Local meteorologist Paul Williams will be guest speaker. A survivor of multiple heart attacks and prostate cancer, Williams will share his story of recovery and resilience, crediting his plant-based diet for his renewed health. Musician Alex Razze will provide acoustic entertainment and auctioneer Susan Morrissette will lead the live auction of Dr. Aysha Akhtar’s paintings. Raffle prizes will also be available.
