The Cape Gazette visits the Arctic Circle while cruising around Iceland

November 23, 2024

Cindy Wedel and Sheila Sferrella enjoyed cruising around Iceland this past summer. A highlight of their trip was visiting the island of Grimsey, Iceland’s northernmost community, which is intersected by the Arctic Circle. The island is home to 70 people who make their living fishing. Due to the remoteness of Grimsey, many people return to the mainland for the winter. Grimsey is a nesting haven for puffins and Arctic Terns. The birds build nests on the ground as there are no trees on the island. The feisty Arctic Terns are quite protective of their nests and regularly dive-bomb people. Cindy and Sheila found their walking sticks very helpful in protecting their heads!
