A brunch held at Baywood Greens Jan. 5 celebrated Cape’s 2024 state championship field hockey team. The state title was the 14th for the field hockey program and No. 11 for coach Kate Windett Austin. Austin has the most state title wins in Delaware field hockey history, surpassing retired Robin Adair of Tower Hill with 10. Tower Hill still leads the state with 18 state championships won.
“We had no expectations [after] losing 11 seniors from last year and only having two seniors this year,” said assistant coach Debbie Windett. “Winning a state championship with so many young players and everyone in a new position was just incredible.”
The Cape girls have won 30 state championships since 2009, including 14 apiece in field hockey and lacrosse, and two in track and field.
The JV team was undefeated at 12-0 with 10 shutouts.
The first year with three middle school teams totaled 80 players. New Fred Thomas went undefeated. A total of 25 eighth-graders will be rising to the high school in 2025.
