Sussex County swears in new members, selects officers and legal staff for 2025

January 8, 2025

Sussex County government has a fresh new look with a changing of the guard for the new year.

November election winners took office Jan. 7, during a swearing-in ceremony held in Sussex County Council chambers on The Circle in Georgetown. Matt Lloyd of Laurel was sworn in as the new District 1 council member, replacing four-term member and longtime council President Michael H. Vincent; Steve C. McCarron of Bridgeville was sworn in as the new District 2 member, replacing Cynthia C. Green; and Jane Gruenebaum of Lewes was sworn in to take over the District 3 seat held by Mark G. Schaeffer. Clerk of the Peace Norman A. ‘Jay’ Jones also took his oath of office, with each official beginning a four-year term.

Following the swearing-in ceremony, county council selected officers for 2025, naming Councilman Douglas B. Hudson of the Dagsboro area to serve as president, a first for him in his six years on council, and choosing Councilman John L. Rieley of Millsboro as vice president.

It is customary for council at the first meeting of each year to elect officers and appoint legal staff. As council president, Hudson will preside over all council meetings in 2025, with Rieley substituting as presiding officer anytime Hudson is unable to attend.

Council also approved J. Everett Moore Jr. for reappointment as county attorney. Moore serves at the pleasure of the county council as the elected body’s chief counsel. Meantime, staff from law firms Moore & Rutt and Parkowski, Guerke & Swayze will represent the board of adjustment and planning & zoning commission, respectively, as assistant county attorneys.
