March 3, 2025

Mary Ann Avery, a beacon of generosity and kindness, passed away peacefully Wednesday, Feb. 19, 2025, in Hebron, Md. Born July 7, 1954, in Lewes, Mary Ann's life was a portrait of selfless dedication and friendly warmth that touched the lives of all who knew her. She leaves behind a legacy of compassion and service that will be deeply missed by her family and friends.

The daughter of Rowland G. Avery and Hildegard E. Avery (nee Pertzel), Mary Ann was welcomed into a world that would be brightened by her presence. Though she is predeceased by her father, mother, and brother, David R. Avery, her spirit is carried on by her sister and brother-in-law, Karen Avery-Bruns and Herman H. Bruns of Santa Rosa Beach, Fla., her nephew, Michael D. Avery of Milton, and cousin, Peter W. Avery of Watervliet, N.Y.

Mary Ann's education began in the halls of Cape Henlopen High School, where she graduated in 1972, and later flourished as she pursued her passion for healthcare. She earned an associate’s degree in applied science for medical laboratory technicians from Del Tech in Georgetown, a testament to her dedication to helping others. With this foundation, she embarked on a career that would span 16 years with the State of Delaware, where her work as an MLT was not just a job but a calling.

Upon retiring to Maryland, Mary Ann did not slow down, but instead, found new ways to express her innate generosity. She became deeply involved in cat and dog rescue programs, a cause close to her heart. Her commitment to these vulnerable creatures was an extension of her overall kindness and her belief in the importance of providing care to all living beings.

Mary Ann's departure from this world leaves a void that cannot be filled, but her influence will continue to be felt. Her love for her family, her passion for her work, and her dedication to animal welfare have left an indelible mark on the hearts of many. As we say goodbye to Mary Ann, we celebrate a life well-lived, full of love, service, and the joy of giving.

A private scattering of ashes will be held at a later date.
