Mental health advocacy award nominations due April 1
The Mental Health Association in Delaware, in partnership with the Division of Substance Abuse and Mental Health, will hold its 24th Annual Empowering Community Wellness Symposium from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Wednesday, May 7, at Bally’s Dover, 1131 N. Dupont Hwy., Dover.
Renowned psychologist and keynote speaker Dr. Ruth Robinson-Nelson will lead the discussion, delving into the theories, implications and significance of identity formation. Her address will set the stage for a day of meaningful dialogue on how identity shapes individuals’ experiences, relationships and sense of belonging.
Attendees will be informed by representatives from a range of Delaware communities including disability advocates, cancer survivors, LGBTQ+ leaders, neurodivergent individuals, formerly incarcerated individuals, mental health advocates, substance use recovery professionals and members of the Nanticoke Indian Tribe, and Hispanic and Haitian communities. These speakers will share personal experiences and perspectives, emphasizing the value of both individual identity and collective belonging.
The symposium will provide a platform for attendees to deepen their understanding of themselves and the identity of others inhabiting Delaware’s diverse communities, strengthen connections and promote mutual respect. Through engaging discussions and shared experiences, participants will gain a broader perspective on what it means to be part of a community, and how to cultivate inclusivity in their personal and professional lives.
During the May 7 event, MHA will present the first Maxine Rosenthal Award for Mental Health Advocacy. Nominations will be accepted through Tuesday, April 1. Rosenthal served as vice president and president of the MHA board from 1998 to 2003. She was a vital part of establishing and maintaining the services MHA still offers.
