AAUW to host disability rights advocate Nov. 21

November 5, 2024

AAUW Coastal Georgetown Branch will meet at 11 a.m., Thursday, Nov. 21, at The Lodge at Historic Lewes.

Disability rights expert Sheri Borrin wlll discuss the book, “Being Heumann,” the memoir of activist Judith Heumann. Considered the mother of the disability rights movement, Heumann died at age 75 in March 2023. Paralyzed by polio when she was 18 months old, she spent her adult life sparking a national movement that led to the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Borrin taught high school economics and American history in Teaneck, N.J., for 33 years. She and her husband Carl bought a little Rehoboth Beach house in 1981, tore it down, built a new one and started enjoying their retirement in 2007.

Borrin’s involvement in disability rights started during a 2010 ski trip when she began to suffer balance issues. Walking problems ensued, and an MRI of her brain showed multiple sclerosis. As Borrin’s ability to walk and balance deteriorated, she began to appreciate the need for society to provide reasonable levels of handicapped access.
