Alliance honors Rehoboth elementary students

March 24, 2025

The Southern Delaware Alliance for Racial Justice recently honored Rehoboth Elementary School students Aaliyah Powell and Javion Turnage for their leadership, effort and excellence.

The students were recognized in a ceremony at school and received $20 gift cards to Browseabout Books in Rehoboth Beach.

A fourth-grader, Aaliyah said her favorite subject is reading, especially fiction, and favorite author is Raina Telgemeier. She also likes social studies because she is interested in history, especially the English colonies. When she goes to college, Aaliya said, she wants to study to be a veterinarian because she really likes animals, and if they are ill, she wants to help them. When she is not in school, Aaliyah likes to watch television with her brother or play on her iPad. She describes herself as an indoor person but does like to play softball.

A fifth-grader, Javion said his favorite subjects are math and science because they are fun, with hands-on activities. Javion is in the Cape Accelerated Program, and he said learning those subjects comes easily for him, and he enjoys the pace.

When he goes to college, Javion said, he wants to major in science or math to gain background knowledge to become a business owner. He is also interested in becoming a professional baseball or football player. He admires Roberto Clemente because he was a good baseball player and activist. When he is not in school, Javion enjoys playing baseball and video games. Javion says leaders should be responsible and respectful. They should listen to adults the first time they are asked to do something.

SDARJ initiated the African American Achievement Award to recognize students who represent the ideals of leadership, improvement, effort and excellence in their schools. Students from each school in the Cape Henlopen and Indian River school districts are recognized throughout the academic year.
