Thoughts from the sidelines

On any given Sunday

December 11, 2015

In a very surprising result, the Philadelphia Eagles beat the New England Patriots by seven points this past Sunday. The Eagles actually played a decent game on both sides of the football and special-teams really helped on the road to this victory.

The Patriots jumped out to a 14 to nothing start to the game, but then the Eagles scored 35 straight points to take a commanding lead. Sam Bradford was a much needed return to the quarterback position. Sanchez should be worried about his spot on the team for next year.

The special-teams lead the charge with a blocked punt that led directly to tying the score at the end of the first half. It also helped that Tom Brady did not have one of his vintage games, and the Patriots, as a team, were making mistakes left and right. The Eagles coaching staff did a good job as well, changing the game plan to run more of the plays straight up the middle.

Despite all of the Patriots mistakes, they almost came back and won anyway with a great fourth quarter. Thankfully it wasn't enough. It was a bit too close for comfort. I hope this turn of events brings us another win this week against the Buffalo Bills.

So now for a little humble pie. I went to see the movie Creed this past weekend with my brother, and surprisingly it was actually pretty good. The storyline did not have much to do with the old Rocky movies which was why I was not a fan originally. The acting was good and the fight scenes were entertaining. There will probably be a sequel to this movie because of the unfinished business the viewer is left thinking about.

In college football, there were no surprising upsets. The four teams that were predicted to make the playoff's did just that. It will be Clemson, Alabama, Michigan State, and Oklahoma and the semi final games will be played on New Year's Eve with the final game being played a week later. This system of playoffs makes it a lot more exciting than the old random BCS system.

The Heisman Trophy presentation will be this weekend. Running-back Derrick Henry of Alabama will probably win but I think that it will be closer than usual. There are only two other candidates this year. Clemson's quarterback Deshaun Watson and Christian McCaffrey (running back / wide receiver) of Stanford. All 3 are quality players.
