Milton Arts Guild will host a presentation from Sakana Walls, a Dover-area artist who honed his creative voice during his years of confinement in the James T. Vaughn Correctional Center near Smyrna. Originally scheduled in February, the event was postponed last month due to the snow forecast.
Art as Redemption is set for 6 p.m., Thursday, March 13, at the Milton CHEER Center, 24855 Broadkill Road, Milton. The talk is free, and the public is encouraged to attend.
While at Vaughn, Walls first began experimenting with art by illustrating letters to his young children. His fellow inmates noticed his pictures and commissioned him to draw pictures for them. He entered the Vaughn art program to further his skills.
After a temporary transfer to the State Correctional Institution Phoenix in Pennsylvania and its art program, Walls had the opportunity to actually exhibit his work publicly through Mural Arts Philadelphia. Once back at Vaughn, he was showcased in a solo show at The Sold Firm, a Wilmington contemporary art gallery.
