Thoughts from the sidelines

Back to 1999

May 6, 2016

So, the Eagles decided to draft Carson Wentz from North Dakota State to be their future quarterback. This decision is actually very ironic because their new head coach Doug Pedersen was the starting quarterback for the Eagles in 1999 when they drafted Donovan McNabb with the second overall pick in that draft. Let's all hope that Carson has as good a career as Donovan did.

And, just in case you're wondering, I did not watch that much of the NFL draft. It is way too boring. I only made it for the first 10 picks.

The Phillies are having a very pleasantly surprising start to this year's baseball season. The very young starting pitching staff is doing an incredible job carrying the entire team on their back. As of today, they are three games over 500.

Without some major assistance from their anemic offense, it will be tough to stay above the 500 mark for the season. But I will always believe there's a remote chance. Been a Phillies fan since I was 6 years old!

I don't usually disagree with something I hear on ESPN, but Danny Kanell, a former football player, is being completely hypocritical.

Recently, he has been talking about a new drug that baseball players are supposedly using to try and beat the testing for steroids. He says that the baseball players should be suspended for the whole season and lose their contract money.

Tough to pass such judgement when football still doesn't care very much about steroid usage and has a weaker suspension policy. In football, the players who get caught are only suspended for four games for the first offense and then no one talks about it when the violating player comes back.

The Kentucky Derby is this weekend. There seems to be one big favorite horse whose name is Nyquist. He has never lost a race! I think it will be better for the sport if he wins the Triple Crown like American Pharaoh did last year.

Horse racing's most recent (i.e. less than 75 years ago!) heyday was in the 1970's when three horses completed the feat. Although I am not a huge horse racing fan, I hope the races are exciting again this year. We'll see what happens.
