Beebe’s Emergency Department team offers helping hands after foot injury

April 25, 2023

I’m writing today to say a big thank you to all of the folks in Beebe Healthcare’s Emergency Department at the Margaret H. Rollins Lewes Campus who were so caring and kind to me a couple of weekends ago.

I took a little tumble at my home April 15. I didn’t think I banged myself up too badly, other than my foot was throbbing and a little tender. Relieved that I generally felt OK, I elevated and iced my foot with diligence and tried not to put much weight on it.

Although I thought I’d managed the mishap well and gotten lucky with the outcome, my foot was much worse when I woke up that Sunday morning. I couldn’t put any weight on it, and I was concerned that I might have fractured or broken a bone. I knew I needed to go to the Emergency Department.

I grabbed an old walking cane I had packed up from my parents’ house several years ago and headed to Beebe to see what was wrong with my foot.

Let me interject here that I am a proud believer in Beebe Healthcare. I am a member of the organization’s 1916 Club, I’ve attended many of its fundraising events, and have received terrific care in many locations and departments within the healthcare system. While I was confident that I would be well taken care of, I admit there was still a little worry about the wait time in the Emergency Department since my injury was not immediately life-threatening.

My expectation of excellent care was met in spades. When I entered the Emergency Department at the Lewes campus, Public Safety Officer Troy Bowden rushed to help me into a wheelchair. From that first second until I was sent home two hours later, I was cared for in a timely, professional and genuine way. Special shout-outs to Max C. Wilkinson, PA; Amber Bennett, RN; Jamie Maroney, RN; Marisa Spudis, RN; Joe McGonegal; Nicole Story and everyone else who attended to me in the exam room, x-ray, CT scan and triage, where my foot was splinted.

I was communicated with clearly and with kindness every step of the way. I was also given all of the paperwork and instructions I needed to follow up with a podiatrist.

As it happened, I did fracture one of the bones in my foot and also tore a ligament. I’m now in a boot and on the road to recovery with yet another great Beebe experience under my belt. Thank you to everyone involved in my excellent care!
