Cannonball 5K Sept. 14 at Lewes Historical Society
The Most Beautiful Race Course in Delaware is the subtitle on the advertisement for the annual Cannonball 5K Run that will be held starting at 8:30 a.m., Sunday, Sept. 14. The Lewes Historical Society is proud to present the 5K and the Trenny Elliott Memorial 1 Mile Walk. The race benefits the society's preservation and educational programs.
The course is designed as a tour of historic Lewes, beginning and ending at The Lewes Historical Society Historic Complex at 110 Shipcarpenter St. It includes scenery along Pilottown Road and views of the Great Marsh, Shipcarpenter Square, Second Street, and the Lewes & Rehoboth Canal. A description of the historic sites along the race route is included on the LHS website. The award ceremony and post-race party will take place at The Lewes Historical Society Complex. Lake Forest Invitational
Known as the season’s first big test, the Lake Forest Cross Country Invitational was held Sept. 6 at Killens Pond State Park in Felton. The meet, in its 57th year with proceeds going to the Lake Forest cross country team, attracted about 30 teams and 1,009 finishers with athletes from Delaware and surrounding states, and gave the state a good look at who has what talent-wise and who has work to do before November.
The meet's participation in teams and athletes was much lower than in the past few years, likely due to the fact that the state championships are to be held on an upstate course. The hot weather conditions also contributed.
Local teams Cape Henlopen, Sussex Tech, and Sussex Central all took part in the meet, with the Ravens finishing seventh in the boys' team race with 187 points, while Cape finished 12th with 276 points. Sussex Central was 14th with 375 points. On the girls' side, the Ravens were fifth with 128 points, while Cape finished eighth with 205 points. Sussex Central finished 13th with 374 points.
First-year cross country runner junior Roxanne Ramirez finished fourth overall in a nice race of 21:19, while another first-timer, Alexis Singh, was 18th in 23:19 for the Ravens. Keren Rams led the Vikings in 24th overall in 23:53, followed by Natasha Taylor of Tech in 24:00 and Marissa Boyle in 30th with a 24:15. Madison MacElrevey finished 42nd for the Vikings in 24:53.
On the boys' side, sophomore Ben Bamforth finished 20th to lead the Ravens in a time of 18:33, followed by Jay Hinds in 30th in a time of 19:08. Ian Carlile was 37th in 19:29, while top Vikings transfer from Ohio, Ryan Wilson, was 39th in 19:49. Junior Joey Montabell of the Vikings was next in 20:10 for 44th, while Connor Morrow was 49th for Tech in 20:18. Cape freshman Sam Nye finished 50th in 20:32 for the Vikings, while Robby Westhoff was 51st for Tech in 20:36.
Barthlemess second, Hundley third at Lake Invite
The local youth Seashore Striders team opened up also at the 93-degree hot and humid Lake Forest Invitational in the middle school event with a good showing of public, private, and club teams taking part in the action. Sixth-grader Emma Barthlemess of Ocean View led the Striders on the girls' side with a second-place finish in 15:29, while Brooke Jones was fourth in 16:16 on the 2.1-mile course. Lainey Shockro was fifth in 16:24, while Lindsay Rambo was seventh in 17:32. Eighth-grader Zoe Callard was eighth in 17:42, while seventh-grader Lindsey Guida was ninth in 18:55.
Other Striders girls outside the top 10 include: Natalie Guida, 11th, 19:20; Devin Hundley, 12th, 19:37; Davina Graybill, 13th, 19:47; Emily Moody, 16th, 21:31; and Brighid Loftus, 17th, 21:35.
On the boys' side of the action, top runner Blake Hundley finished third to two of the best on the East Coast in champion William Simmons of the Landon School who set a new course record of 12:00 and Andrew Avila of Wilmington who ran 12:04 for second. Hundley finished third in 12:15, a full 50 seconds ahead of the next nearest runner.
Brexton Carter, in his first cross country race, was eighth overall in 14:28, while Luke Burton was ninth in 15:14. Brock Diaz was 13th to wrap up the Striders.
