Cape boys’ lacrosse holds its own against powerful Ridgewood

March 24, 2025

The Cape boys’ lacrosse team finished its preseason with a scrimmage against perennial powerhouse Ridgewood High School from northern New Jersey March 22 at the Vikings’ Legends Stadium.

“We always look forward to playing Ridgewood every year,” said Cape head coach Geoff Shupard. “It’s a great test for our team leading into the season. I thought the boys played fast, aggressive and communicated very well on defense. We have to keep working on our shooting, but the offense worked well together and got themselves some good opportunities. This was an improvement over Wednesday’s scrimmage, which is always good to see, but we still have some things to clean up.”

The Maroons took a unofficial 4-2 win back to North Jersey, but each team showed that they are ready for the 2025 season to start.

“Ridgewood is a very good team with a lot of great players,” said Cape senior Evan Burris. “We played a lot better than our first scrimmage, but still need to work on some things. We had a lot of good opportunities on the offensive side, but just need to put the ball in the back of the net. Our defense did a great job holding them to only a few goals. We came out from the first whistle and started the game fast and aggressive. That’s how we need to be against all of the top teams we play in the future.”

“I thought the defense played extremely well in the scrimmage, giving up very few shots,” said Cape goalie Mason Trench. “As a whole, the team played well. We are ready for the season to come. All of the guys have been working very well together, and our team is a very tight group.”

Cape travels to the Bullis School Monday, March 24. The last time they faced Bullis was in 2019.
