Coming off an appearance in the 2024 DIAA finals, the Cape boys’ lacrosse team is anxious to bring a state championship back to Lewes.
“This team is uniquely motivated,” said head coach Geoff Shupard. “These kids have been through a lot over the past year. Burke Healy, Jake Hutchison and Evan Burris were voted captains, and I am confident those three will lead the way and set a great example. We have a lot of talent, but we also have a lot of work to do. I am excited to see this team reach their potential.”
The Vikings haven’t won the trophy since 2019, when they defeated Salesianum 12-10.
“These guys have a lot to play for this season,” said Shupard. “The guys have bonded together. We are motivated to win against everyone we face. The next opponent is the most important.”
The Class of 2025 comprises Brycen Stewart, Tanner Wyshock, Ronan Presler, Tyler Mitchell, Hank Anderson, Jake Hutchison, Burke Healy, Luke Pickard and Evan Burris.
Returning to the cage is Mason Trench, a first-team all-state pick as a sophomore last season after posting a 5.9 goals against average.
Playing big in front of Trench will be the long pole defense of Hutchison, Eric Uffelman, Mason Jack and Brooks Leonhartt.
Big guns cranking the rock will be Healy, Anderson, Burris, Brenner Short, Grant Conway, Braddock Smith and Ryan Morgan.
Assisting on the sideline with Shupard are former head coach Mark D’Ambrogi and Cape grads and former all-state players Jack Lingo, Franc Cook and Joe Vavala. AJ Marshall is the JV head coach. He will be assisted by Andrew Scrutchfield and Pat O’Leary.
Tough competition this season will be Bullis and Broadneck from Maryland, Westtown from Pennsylvania and perennial rival Sallies in Delaware.
The Vikings open Monday, March 24, at Bullis.
