After last year’s 11-11 season, Cape boys’ basketball coach Steve Re likes his chances in the Henlopen Conference with the youngest team he’s ever coached.
“I love this team,” said Re, who has been coaching for more than 20 years, 14 of them at Cape. “We are really young. We have 15 freshmen in the program. I love their attitude. I love their listening. Their skills are good. This team has a chance to be really competitive. We have all great kids with great attitudes. If we keep sharing the ball and playing great defense together, we can win a lot of games. Any flaws we may have can be overcome with great team chemistry.”
Lost to the 2024 graduation were Collin Sivils, Emanuel Ortiz Villaman, Kameran Trammell, Liam Mack and Jack Schell, but Re likes his senior leadership for this season.
“Dame Robinson is our lone senior, and his improvement has been super impressive so far,” Re said. “We have several guys who can get out in transition and throw it down. Our younger guys got great experience last year, and they are ready to make an impact.”
“I’m looking forward to playing with my brothers and winning as many games as we can,” said Robinson. “With the team we have now, I can see us having a very good season because no one is selfish and everyone moves the ball. We play together and we listen to what our coach tells us, which is what any successful team needs. As the only senior on the team, I think my role is to be a leader for the others and to lead by example.”
Back are juniors Braxton Figgs, Quardell Richards, Tremaine Batson, Mar’Zell Burris-Campbell, Yasir Alatta and Michael Thompson. Sophomores are Jameson Tingle, Geordan Downing, Stephen Sivels and Ozmeer Batson.
“I believe the team will look really good this year,” said Tingle. “We have good size and good guards who can play the game of basketball in an elite way. Our team’s goal is to make a run in the playoffs.”
“Dover and Smyrna are always tough in conference play, and the local rivals are always a challenge in boys’ basketball,” said Re. “We need to be prepared and focused. There are no nights off in the Henlopen Conference when it comes to boys’ basketball – everyone can play.”
The Vikings open on the road Friday, Dec. 6, at Lake Forest. Game time is 5:45 p.m.
