Cape Henlopen School District officials recognized Midway Motion & Fitness as the Cape Community Champion for October at the Oct. 26 school board meeting.
Sussex Consortium students visit the fitness center several days a week to help staff with tasks including wiping down equipment, vacuuming, washing and folding towels, and greeting clients, said school board member Janis Hanwell.
At Midway Motion & Fitness, educators are able to reinforce lessons students learn about healthy eating and exercise in the Sussex Consortium’s healthy relationships curriculum, Hanwell said.
After students complete their shift, Sussex Consortium adaptive physical education teacher Patrick Zmuda assists them in using a wide range of machines, including the elliptical, treadmill and rower, Hanwell said.
Superintendent Bob Fulton said the district is fortunate to have so many partners over the years that have welcomed students into their businesses to provide them with support and job experiences.
