Cape Henlopen Elks present awards to JROTC cadets

June 25, 2023

Cape Henlopen Elks Lodge 2540 members presented award certificates and a scholarship to two outstanding cadets at the 2022-2023 Army Junior ROTC Awards Program May 31 in the Cape Henlopen High School auditorium.

The veterans committee of the Cape Henlopen Elks presented their Distinguished JROTC Cadet Scholarship Award to Ninfa Cantu in recognition of her outstanding achievement in academics, leadership and citizenship at Cape. She will go on to attend Delaware State University and has enlisted in the Delaware National Guard.

This annual $1,000 scholarship is also referred to as the Bill Dunn Memorial Scholarship, named to honor the memory of a veteran and active lodge member who, in his will, donated a significant amount to the veterans committee and the lodge in his will. This award is also possible due to the success of the veterans committee charity golf outing each fall, and the continuing dedication and hard work of the local JROTC, led by instructor Sgt. Richard Hurt.

In addition, Cadet Jayden Taylor was awarded the Elks Community Service Medal for his overall contribution to the betterment of the community through various volunteer opportunities. This award was originated by JROTC staff and bears the Elks Lodge name based on its many years of supporting the JROTC program.
