The first of several planned infrastructure projects at Cape Henlopen State Park got underway this week.
Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control Division of Parks contractor A-Del started to repave the main beach parking lot near the Sen. David McBride Bathhouse this week. Work is expected to be completed just before Memorial Day.
Parking and pedestrian access will not be available from the parking lot area. Beach access is available at Herring Point, Fort Miles, the Point and comfort station beach crossover.
The $1.7 million project is part of the 2022-25 capital plan for park improvements throughout the state.
Other key projects with high priorities at the park include sewer upgrades and replacement with possible connection to the Lewes system ($5.5 million) and renovation of the Biden Environmental Education Center ($11.5 million).
The state has also budgeted $250,000 in the fiscal year 2023 budget for preliminary work to eventually replace the Cape Henlopen State Park fishing pier. Another $16 million has been requested over the next two fiscal years.
