The Cape girls’ lacrosse team escaped Queen Anne’s March 26, with a 9-8 victory and head to Broadneck in Annapolis Saturday, March 29, to face another stalwart team the Vikings have beaten two straight years with one-goal victories.

Cape and Queen Anne’s were tied at 7-7 with 5:15 left to play when Lina Frederick, playing attack on the down low position, rang the bell on a reverse scoop shot to give Cape the lead.

Riley Klepper (four goals) answered for the Lions, tying the game near the two-minute mark.

A short time later, Mairead Rishko got lost in traffic and sent home a left-handed shot that proved to be the game-winning goal. Ally Diehl (three goals) won the ensuring draw control and the Vikings ran out the clock.

"We work on the delay/keep away in practice, but still you have to go out there and do it against live competition,” said coach Lindsey Underwood. “We did a lot of passing. I would have liked to have seen more running away from trouble.”

Diehl led Cape in scoring with three goals. Macy Steinwedel and Rishko each had two goals. Frederick and Haley Gamuciello each scored once.

Cape assists were Claire Lopez with three, and Rishko and Frederick each with one.

Abbey Schaeffer went the distance in goal, recording two saves for the Vikings.

Emma Dulin had seven saves for the Lions. Single goals for the Lions were scored by Haley Cole, Charlotte Schmidt, RJ Ensor and Karis Hickson.

Notes: Cape in 7-4 versus Queen Anne’s since 2013, having won the last six. There have been four one-goal games and seven decided by two goals or less. The Lions won the four of the first five meetings. All those Cape teams went on to win state championships. Cape lost the JV game 5-4 when a tying goal in the final seconds by Blair Chubb was waved off for dangerous propelling.
