The Cape Henlopen School District Board of Education announced plans Nov. 14, to fill the board seat vacated by Janet Maull-Martin in August.
Maull-Martin, a member representing the Area C district, was first elected in 2019, and was about one month into her second four-year term when she resigned.
Superintendent Robert Fulton said the current school board members will consider a short-term replacement, who will be appointed to serve until June 30, 2025.
In May, the Area C seat will be up for election during the regular school board election, and anyone who lives in the Area C corridor that lies in between Route 9 and Route 24, east of Savannah Road and over to the bay, can file to run. The term would be for the three years remaining on Maull-Martin’s seat. Then the seat would be up for re-election after three years.
“We’ve done this a few other times,” Fulton said, referring to previous board vacancies.
The board and school district provided the following statement on Maull-Martin’s resignation.
“The Cape Henlopen school district greatly appreciates Ms. Maull-Martin’s many years of service to the district as an educator, administrator, a community leader and for the past six years as a member of the Board of Education. The Board of Education will seek to fill the Area C vacancy at the Dec. 12 Board of Education meeting. Anyone interested in filling the Area C seat is welcome to submit a letter of interest via USPS mail or by emailing Robert.Fulton@cape.k12.de.us. The letter must include a current physical address verifying eligibility to represent Area C. All letters must be submitted by noon, Monday, Dec. 9. The individual appointed at the meeting will serve from that date until June 30, 2025.”
When contacted for a statement, Maull-Martin submitted an explanation of her resignation in her own words.
