Congratulations to the Class of 2023

An untimely and unwelcome storm June 6 couldn’t spoil the commencement celebration at Cape Henlopen High School. 

As seniors crossed the graduation stage in Legends Stadium, there’s no doubt many students were feeling mixed emotions. 

Graduation is a bittersweet moment. There are feelings of joy, pride and excitement, but also sadness and nostalgia, as the ceremony marks the end of a significant part of life. The feelings were undoubtedly shared by parents, grandparents, and likely a few teachers and administrators.  

Over the last four years, these seniors won state championships together in sports, worked side by side in competitive events like mock trial and Odyssey of the Mind, and learned valuable skills in Cape’s various clubs. Every bit of the high school experience — good and bad — helped shape these kids into who they are today. 

Like the four classes before them, the Class of 2023 had a disruptive experience due to the COVID-19 pandemic. They lived through virtual and hybrid schooling, and the eventual transition back to in-person learning. It certainly took a lot of patience, and likely took an emotional toll on many. The Class of 2023 will forever be part of one of the weirdest — and scariest — times in our country’s history. But these students got through it, and they will soon begin the next chapter. 

So, graduation is a time to celebrate achievements and to reflect on the memories they made during their time at school.

Whether the next step is college, the military or a career, Cape graduates should always cherish their time with their classmates. Now comes a time to set new goals, create new memories and embrace new challenges. To the graduates of 2023, congratulations and good luck on the path ahead.
