On Father's Day, Bryson DeChambeau held on to win his second U.S. Open by one shot over Rory Mcllroy in dramatic fashion. Mcllroy and DeChambeau were going back-and-forth, great shot after great shot, for most of the final round. McIlroy had a two-shot lead with five holes to go, and then succumbed to the pressure by missing two short putts on the 16th and 18th holes. Bryson pulled off the shot of his life when he hit a 55-yard bunker shot to 3 feet on the 18th hole which prevented the tournament from going into a two-hole playoff.
I’m happy for Bryson that he won the tournament because when he won the 2020 U.S. Open at Winged Foot Golf Club, there were very few fans because of all the COVID restrictions. This time he got to experience what a typical winner does. The fact that Mcllroy lost in this very frustrating fashion is going to be hard for him to overcome right away.
They will come back to Pinehurst in five years for the U.S. Open in 2029. I personally hope they make some changes to the green complexes to make them a little simpler. I thought some of the greens were too extreme. Specifically the par five fifth hole which was too hard to keep the ball on the green, and on the par three ninth hole, it was like playing on a ski slope on the back of the green. They just need to grow some rough on the edge of the greens to keep good shots from going too far off the main putting surface. I'm all in for challenging, but these were too extreme.
The Boston Celtics completed their mission and recorded their 18th NBA Championship by beating the Dallas Mavericks comfortably in Game 5 of the NBA Finals. They were well-deserved champions this year. They dominated the Eastern Conference for the whole season and played impressive defense throughout the whole NBA Finals. The Mavericks never scored more than 100 points in any of the games they lost which is very notable in the high-scoring age of the NBA. Now I am officially done rooting for the Celtics and will focus on the 76ers once more.
I hope the 76ers do not get in trouble for trying to tamper with Paul George as a free agent. Joel Embiid appeared on NBA Countdown on ESPN before Game 5 of the finals and was talking to Paul. A few years ago, the 76ers were fined for tampering with a few players before the official free agent period was to start. The NBA Draft is Thursday, June 27. The draft only has two rounds, so the draft picks are very important. Go 76ers!
