Delaware AG endorses McBride for Congress

November 1, 2024

As Delaware’s attorney general, I’ve had the honor of working to uphold integrity in our state government and trust in our institutions, and I’m proud to support Sarah McBride, a candidate who shares these values and has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to accountability and transparency in government.

Sarah and I share a vision for a Delaware where government works for its citizens, not the other way around. Transparency is the cornerstone of a healthy democracy, and I have witnessed firsthand Sarah's dedication to ensuring that the actions of our elected officials and public servants are open to scrutiny. Transparency breeds trust, and trust is essential for effective governance.

I was proud to work alongside Sarah to pass Senate Bill 128. This legislation establishes the crime of obstruction of justice, ensuring that powerful individuals and organizations cannot silence victims and witnesses or impede investigations into fraud, abuse, corruption and white-collar crime. By holding those who corruptly influence or obstruct justice accountable, we are strengthening our legal framework and upholding the rule of law.

It is a sign of great integrity when public officials lead efforts to hold themselves accountable. Sarah McBride's leadership in this area has been exemplary. I was deeply proud to work with her to pass the Abuse of Power Prevention Act last year, with bipartisan support and amidst healthy debate.

The Abuse of Power Prevention Act is a vital reform to Delaware’s official misconduct statute that ensures appropriate accountability for public servants who abuse their positions of power and violate the public trust. It aligns the penalties for this crime with the severity of the underlying offense, and modernizes language around hate crimes and discrimination – a change that is unfortunately more necessary than ever.

Sarah worked hard to pass the Abuse of Power Prevention Act, and she did it by having her trademark thoughtful, empathetic conversations with her colleagues and other stakeholders. This act is a testament not just to her commitment to the people we serve and the trust that they put in us, but also to her integrity and skill as a legislator.

The need for transparency and accountability is more pressing than ever. Our nation is experiencing a profound state of division and distrust in governmental institutions – a crisis of hope. Public confidence in our leaders has been shaken by repeated instances of corruption and abuse of power. In these times, it is essential to demonstrate that our government can govern itself with integrity and transparency.

Sarah McBride is the leader we need in Congress to do just that. She will take our Delaware values of justice, fairness and respect and bring them to the United States House of Representatives. I have been proud to work with her during her time in the state Senate, and I will be proud to cast my vote for her Tuesday, Nov. 5.
