Delmar hockey downs Cape 4-2 powered by Jordyn Hollamon

Cape field hockey dropped from the ranks of the unbeaten Oct. 17, losing 4-2 in Delmar to fall to 12-1 on the season. The Vikings must win one of two remaining road games this week at Sussex Tech and at Sussex Central to win the Northern Division. The winner of the North will host South winner Delmar Saturday, Oct. 26.

“Both us and Cape are very similar with our inexperience,” said Delmar coach Jodi Hollamon, who is completing her 26th year of coaching – 16 at Delmar, and before that, 10 years in Maryland.

Delmar does have Maryland commit Jordyn Hollamon, who is a loaded weapon on the Bermuda pitch of Delmar.

Delmar jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first quarter.

Eighth-grader Ava Reid opened the scoring when she deflected a low-flying rocket off the stick of Hollamon past goalie Izzy Mekulski. 

Laela Brown got loose in the second quarter and found Kadence Melmin on the doorstep for a 2-0 Wildcats advantage. 

Cape unlocked the vault with 2:59 left in the half when Emily Wells squeezed a goal near the post past goalie Marleigh Wells. The halftime score was 2-1 in favor of Delmar in a game where shots on goal were hard to come by. Delmar had a 9-7 advantage at the end of the game. 

Jordyn Hollamon struck twice in the third period, scoring unassisted at 11:09, then on a goal assisted by Emily Smith with 0.38 left in the quarter. 

Cape’s Regan Best, a former goalie turned backline defender, moved up to forward in the fourth quarter and scored to make the final score 4-2. 

“The tournament fields are wide open this year. It's honestly anyone’s championship,” said coach Hollamon. 

Delmar is defending Division II state champion, while Cape is the defending Division I state champion.          

Cape coach Kate Austin said, “We made some mistakes defensively, but overall there were a lot of positives with the ball patterns we used. The coaches were proud of the grit the team showed in continuing to work hard even when we were down in the fourth. One of our goals was to limit corner opportunities for Delmar knowing how effective Jordyn is, but we fell short there. Hopefully we have another opportunity and get to play for a conference championship. But before then, it’s back to work preparing for two division games.”
