In the first game of the year, the Delmarva Christian softball team had to host Indian River and one of its aces, Zoe Quillen, who picked up nine strikeouts en route to a 10-0 win in six innings.
The visitors jumped out to an early 4-0 lead after the first inning. The Royals had a brief glimpse of hope when senior Bella Marinelli whacked a double into the outfield. It would prove to be the only hit Quillen would surrender, as she went on to walk just two batters in six innings of work. Her changeup was particularly vexing.
“She takes a lot of speed off, so it's very hard to stay back on it,” said coach Chrissy Dunn.
Despite the loss, Dunn is optimistic about the team producing more favorable outcomes in the future.
“We are battling a lot of injuries and illnesses, and I thought they came out to compete against a tough opponent for the first game,” Dunn said. “They're working hard, and our goal is to compete every game, but we have players playing different positions than they typically play.”
Delmarva Christian will hope to pick up its first win when the squad travels to St. Michaels (Md.) to play at 4 p.m., Friday, March 28.
