Friends at Milton Elementary students found themselves at the Children’s Beach House in Lewes July 10, as part of a new community partnership.
Children in the summer enrichment program rotated through different activities, including a ropes course, field games, theater, sandcastle contest and free beach time during the field trip.
Students in the summer program receive tutoring, and play reading and math games to prevent the summer learning slide and retain skills learned during the school year. After academic sessions, students enjoy recess and a snack before breaking out into clubs, including Zumba and cooking without a stove.
In addition to the trip to Children's Beach House, the 130 students enrolled in the Summer FAME program will also host the Delaware State Fire School to learn about being safe in and out of their homes, participate in field day, travel to the Freeman Stage to participate in breakdancing lessons, learn how to take care of their pets from SPCA of Delaware representatives, and wrap up the summer with a trip to Jungle Jim’s Water Park.
FAME will continue its new partnership with the Children’s Beach House during its afterschool program in the 2023-24 academic year.
In spring 2019, FAME was awarded a Delaware Department of Education 21st Century Nita M. Lowey Community Learning Center program grant of $320,000 per year for up to five years, for a total of $1.6 million to expand summer and afterschool programs, and create partnerships with local organizations.
FAME provides enrichment activities to improve the academic success of students from Title I schools. Schools are designated as Title I based on the percentage of students who come from low-income families.
